When Animals Attack 2: It's HAMmer Time!

Think that "swine flu" is scary? Of course you do! But, what may be even scarier than the biggest pop culture phenomenon since the "official" Lords Prayer Cross, is if you were to drop the flu in swine flu, replace it with the word killer, then swap the word swine and killer, and what have you got? That's right folks, killer swine. Not just killer swine here dudes and dudettes, but GIANT KILLER SWINE! Giant killer swine are waaay more frightening than some lames McPlain's little cough and sniffle, and last I looked, a stuffy nose doesn't even compare to an over-sized pig with a 'tude.

Only thing that could possibly be worse than a pig with PMS is TWO pissed piggies! Much to my joy, that is exactly what we are getting in the form of two giant pig films, one being the South Korean made giant boar flick, Chaw, and the other being the American made Pig Hunt. These are two films that both look very fun and completely insane in two totally different ways.

First up…Chaw! Directed by Shin Jeong-won, Chaw is clearly the more serious of the two movies even though it has been described as a black comedy by some…not so sure as to how true that is, but whatever. It looks like it could be a badass monster romp and hopefully it will be as good as promised from this great Korean language trailer. Chaw's story rings familiar Jaws territory, but I'm totally cool with the story of..."a group of hunters and science types heading into the mountains to stop the infernal beast known simply as, Chaw. Chaw (short for Charles maybe?), may have been behind the death of one of the hunter's daughters and also quite possibly could have taken a member of the hunting group's mothers hostage (?)." A few folks are making comparisons to The Host and I guess I can kinda see why, since it too is a Korean movie that also has a giant monster in it. But at the same time, I don’t think it's fair to act like The Host is the only monster movie that can come out of Korea, and Chaw isn't even really a monster so much as it's a GIANT FUCKING PIG! There's such a difference.

If Chaw is the more serious of the two movies, then Pig Hunt is definitely the much wackier of these two giant pig films. And with a premise like..."a group of friends head into the woods to do some wild pig hunting, but eventually find themselves on the run from a gigantic black boar known simply as the Ripper, a group of revenge seeking hillbillies, and an all female cult that grows pot and in their spare time, worship the oversized pig." Wha-wha-what?! This James Isaac directed romp seems like it could be the lesser of this monster pig renaissance, but with the right mindset, I'm sure it could be quite the good time. This is a film that has Les Claypool (!) in the cast and up until the end of the trailer, you almost forget that this is a killer pig film with all of this other crazy shit going on and a whole bunch of kick-ass X-treme dirt bike action!

Technically, Pig Hunt was already released, or at least it has a release date of 2008, but at the moment, its making rounds playing the bigger cities and also some festivals. I hope that Pig Hunt will be making its way to DVD sooner than later. Chaw, on the other hand, still has not even been released in its native country as of this posting, so that DVD release wait will unfortunately be a much longer one for sure. Either way, I am super psyched for this giant killer pig action on the horizon and I really hope both movies deliver in one way or another. I also really hope that in one of these films, the hero that stops the gigantic pig in the end, will do so with a big metal pole through the mouth and out the back door, followed by a rockin' pig roast and the line…"Enough swine fo' everyone to dine!" That would truly be HOG heaven. Sorry, I'll stop HOGging all of your time with bad jokes.

After I read some of your posts I find myself re reading the lines that made me LOL. I then want to copy and paste them in the comments to highlight them and read once more.
I didn't do that because I began picturing scenes from "The Host" but with pigs. I lost my train of thought...

The first sign of killer swine flu is loss of thought!

I am *in my mind* re-imagining Cloverfield with a pig instead of the Cloverfield monster.

The Zodiac killer from the film Zodiac replaced by the pig from Green Acres maybe?

How a bout Pigs on a Plane instead of Snakes on a Plane?! Replace the plane with a bed and you could have Pigs in a Blanket?!

I'm done...for now!

I'm gonna be in hog heaven when Chaw comes out - maybe this'll be the killer pig classic I've waited my whole life for!

What? Babe: Pig in the City wasn't a classic killer pig film?!

My money would be on Chaw being the better of the two films...classic will hopefully be the description for it when it comes out!

PIG HUNT looks far more up my alley, there seems to be a more Drive-In feel to it, looks a bit more badass, whereas CHAW looks like the same old cliche monster film only in this case substituting a giant pig for the shark, giant snake, godzilla etc.

It is certainly clear that Chaw is just another of many Jaws rip-offs. It is whether Chaw is a good Jaws rip-off that remains to be seen. The Jaws archetype is a classic story line that as with any classic tale can be done well as long as there is a sense of care and thought put forth by the filmmakers.

Pig Hunt on the other hand just looks like pure insanity and there is so much going on in the trailer that you know you will be in for a good sleazy time. I hope that it delivers on the fun and cheese while being able to take itself seriously at the right moments.
