I love netflix. Do you know what I love even more than netflix? That's right! Instant watch on netflix! If it wasn't for the truly inspired merger of xbox and netflix I most likely wouldn't have seen Cold Prey.Cold Prey is a Norwegian thriller/slasher. 5 friends go snowboarding in some pretty glorious mountains and end up stranded in an abandon hotel. They begin to *spoiler!* get killed off. Ya know what, I'm going to get my label gun out and call this one a straight slasher. At this point in my paragraph I am struggling with what to say. Everything I start to type comes across hateful and unforgiving. I did not hate this movie. The thing is, I didn't really like it either.
Let's start on a positive note; Cold Prey is gorgeous. If the setting and the snow are supporting characters, then the abandoned 70's ski lodge is the leading man. The structure itself was the only interesting thing in the film. The creepy and ominous nature of the lodge was the only thing building tension. Welcome to the negative.
There was nothing different, shocking, challenging or memorable (other than the setting) about Cold Prey. The plot was predictable and stale. This film was just very formulaic to me. I may be asking for too much. I myself said not 2 paragraphs ago that this was a "straight slasher". Since when are slashers supposed to challenge viewers?
In the end, Cold Prey was entertaining enough. The snow and the abandoned propriety make it worth a watch. I am really curious to see what other people thought of this film. I knew very little going in and I was a bit saddened this film never went outside the box.

I started writing a blog about this film almost the same time you posted this one! There are a ton of great things about Cold Prey, but there are also a lot of bad things too. You'll have to wait to read my future post to know what I liked and didn't like about it...how exciting, a cliffhanger!

I really need to get motivated and do the netflix - XBox deal. Right now I have Blockbuster and I have grown tired of it.
Oh and I have to check out this flick. Sounds craptascular! =)
Aw. I thought the lead characters had enough depth to make at least three of them likely and the other two sort of redeemed themselves before gory fates. Like The Pool (another slasher I probably give too much credit towards; more of a personal favourite than this one but actually nothing like as well made), the cast is really rather attractive.
Also, the killer had an appropriately stand-out back-story, and is human enough in this one (the sequel blows that, which was disappointing) to engender a degree of sympathy.
I agree with you about the setting . Another disappointment with the sequel is that they don't spend enough time revisiting it, and fail to keep the claustrophobic edge as a consequence, relying a little too heavily on stupid people doing stupid things to generate tension.
Both films have grown on me though – entertaining enough the first time, better with each viewing afterwards.
